Goose Hummock Outdoor Outfitters in Orleans has always been a mainstay for Cape Cod outdoorsmen. New owner Phil Howarth remains dedicated to preserving the heritage of Cape Cod’s oldest fishing and hunting supply store while incorporating new energy and vision. One of his first visions was to integrate Apple iPad & Mac Computer technology and SAVANT Systems automation in a custom project to enhance the customer experience in the store.

Automation is a rapidly growing field in technology and building, with new homes and business builds increasingly including smart home/smart office tech as an essential selling point. Smart phones and tablets are frequently used to control everything from lighting to climate to home-theatre media, so having an integrated system to control it all (with a familiar interface!) is something new owners are growing to expect. Existing retail spaces are wisely investing in SAVANT Systems to give customers a customized, easy to use experience. 

What is it? We’re glad you asked.

At Goose Hummock, seven iPads each present independent custom content to the customer. Customers can browse the tide charts for local fishing areas, weather reports linked to the local marine buoy forecasts, browse the Goose Hummock website, and more. What sets the SAVANT installation apart is the ability for customers to view product demonstrations videos for the merchandise in that area. Not sure which lure is going to land the catch of the day? Simply tap the product button and watch as a high definition video is played on the Retina Display of the iPad, explaining the advantages of the products before you. And on the wall of the showroom, a high definition tv displays HD product demonstrations, charter fishing videos, and slide shows of the recent fishing tournament catch. Locally produced video content will not only show you the products in action, but also the staff and customers on the water for a personalized experience.

What it needs.

The system all begins with a SAVANT Automation controller, which is hosted on a Mac Mini. WIth quad-core i7 intel processing power, the Mac Mini is capable of executing automation control commands, video and audio streaming content, and security camera management all effortlessly from within a SAVANT application. With the SAVANT Automation system, expandability to include lighting controls, HVAC environmental controls and more is covered, so the need to upgrade computers is not necessary. Keep in mind that the system is all controlled by something you probably already own: an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Mac Computer.
